Artist Statement
The theme of Brad's work revolves around life, the process of
nature, and the passage of time. The rings of a tree show time,
life, and growth. "Wood is the ghost of the tree. In my work,
I attempt to show the spirit of a once living organism, the flow
of life with birth, suffering, beauty, and death. I see a constant
current of change." Brad's fluted, flowing shapes are inspired
by his clay work. His intent is to create an illusion that the
wood was formed while in a fluid state. Apparently success has
been obtained: most people who see Brad's work assume that it
had been steam bent or manipulated with chemicals. Brad's "hand
vessels", in which two handprints are carved inside and outside
have been defined as "truly amazing". Brad considers his tall,
flowing, and very narrow "canyon series" to be his most inspiring
work: the canyon series was inspired by erosion and geological
time like Glacier's u-shaped valley and the Grand Canyon. |
